According to reports, a Thai soldier was killed. Tensions had escalated the day before when the Thai army ordered residents of four border provinces to evacuate their homes and head to shelters due to the risk of intensified clashes. The situation remains tense on both sides as developments on the ground are assessed.

The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia is one of the longest-standing regional conflicts in Southeast Asia, with limited clashes erupting over disputed border areas in recent decades, especially around historical temples and mountain passes. Despite previous attempts to ease tensions, the extended border line between the two countries has been prone to sudden outbreaks of violence, often resulting in casualties among civilians and military personnel and displacing residents from adjacent areas.

In October 2025, the two countries successfully signed an internationally brokered agreement in the presence of US President Donald Trump, a move described at the time as a significant diplomatic breakthrough that ended years of chronic tension. The agreement included mechanisms for monitoring the ceasefire, demarcating temporary borders, and enhancing security cooperation to prevent the recurrence of clashes.

However, recent developments indicate the fragility of this peace, with renewed tensions and a return to mutual accusations between the two sides over responsibility for border shootings.
