The Internal Security Chief of Damascus Governorate, Brigadier General Osama Mohammad Khair Atkeh, confirmed in a statement to the Syrian News Agency (SANA) on Tuesday that investigations began immediately after the incident targeting several rare statues, according to Syrian television reports.
Earlier, an American news agency reported that officials said thieves broke into the National Museum last Sunday night and stole six marble statues dating back to the Roman era. The theft was discovered Monday morning after finding the door of the Classical Antiquities Department smashed.
It is noted that the museum was reopened in January 2025 after years of closure due to the war in Syria. The museum houses a wide collection from various historical periods, from the Hellenistic and Roman ages to the Byzantine era.
Despite the enhanced security measures at the museum after the fall of the Assad regime, including the installation of metal gates and surveillance cameras, this did not prevent the recent incident.
