Trump and El-Sisi Host Gaza Peace Summit

Before departing, Trump told reporters, “I am honored to participate, and it will be an unprecedented event.” The Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh is hosting a peace summit today, Monday, aiming to end the war in the Gaza Strip. The summit is co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and American President Donald Trump, with the participation of leaders from more than 20 countries, as announced by the Egyptian presidency.

The first phase of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip came into effect last Friday afternoon. This resulted from indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, which took place in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh last week, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, the United States, and Turkey, based on a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the war in Gaza. Hamas and Israel signed the arrangements for the first phase.

Hamas announced that the agreement includes “ending the war on Gaza, withdrawal of the occupation, entry of aid, and exchange of prisoners,” calling on the guarantor parties to compel the Israeli government to fully implement the agreement’s obligations. Last Friday, the Israeli army confirmed that its forces have positioned themselves along the new operational deployment lines toward the yellow line as part of the first phase of the agreement while maintaining control over approximately 53 percent of the Gaza Strip.

On September 29, Trump revealed a plan during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the nearly two-year-long war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
