Trump noted that he wishes to keep Budapest as a potential summit location with the Russian president. He explained that the ongoing fighting in Ukraine is the reason the summit with Putin has not yet taken place. Trump added, “Orban and I agree on the possibility of resolving the conflict in Ukraine in the near future,” emphasizing that he “inherited” the Ukrainian conflict from Biden but intends to resolve it.
Orban said, “What we in the West did (the conflict in Ukraine) several years ago was a grave mistake and it must be stopped.” Regarding oil supplies, the American president stated today, Friday, that the United States is considering the possibility of granting Hungary an exemption from sanctions concerning Russian oil supplies.
The Hungarian Prime Minister had previously stated that he has “several ideas” to end the conflict in Ukraine, which he will present to the American president. Orban said before starting his talks with Trump at the White House, “Today we have many ideas for cooperation, including economic, military, and political cooperation.”
