Turkey Discovers 75 Billion Cubic Meters of Gas

Anadolu reported, on Wednesday evening, that Bayraktar announced the discovery of 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas last May in the ‘Gok Tepe-3’ well through drilling operations in the Black Sea. The Turkish minister confirmed that this amount is enough to meet Turkey’s gas needs for one and a half years, explaining that the discovered quantity could meet household gas needs for 4.5 years, which also equates to an economic volume of 30 billion dollars at present.

He pointed out that onshore oil drilling operations are ongoing and that these figures will increase by the end of the year. He noted that renewable energy production in Turkey increased by 7,000 megawatts in 2024, and this year a record will be set with an increase of 10,000 megawatts in solar and wind energy.

The Turkish minister highlighted that this generates emission-free electricity and significantly contributes to ending energy dependency on foreign sources. Turkey also aims to have a nuclear capacity of 20,000 megawatts by 2050.

Bayraktar emphasized that negotiations are underway with some countries to include 4 to 8 reactors in the Sinop (north) and Thrace (northwest) regions, in addition to the ‘Akkuyu’ nuclear power plant with a capacity of 4,800 megawatts in Mersin province (south).
