Fidan stated during an interview, “I discussed this issue (security guarantees) with Rubio today. Turkey plays a pivotal role in this matter.” In the same context, Fidan mentioned that he held talks with the U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkov and the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, noting that Turkey still hopes for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
He said, “I had a phone conversation with Whitkov last night, and today we held talks with Umerov. We hope for peace. The situation developed during the Istanbul talks, and then we saw these issues raised at the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska. There are, of course, issues.”
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that the Russian-Ukrainian meeting in Istanbul would be fruitful. During an opening speech at the Ciragan Palace, Fidan said, “We hope that the negotiations proceed productively to achieve the desired goals. This is our primary expectation,” adding, “We (Turkey) are ready to do whatever is necessary to resolve the conflict and facilitate its resolution.”
