Before the UAE-Afghanistan T20I Tri-Series match at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday, a poignant moment unfolded as players from both teams observed a minute of silence for the victims of a devastating earthquake in the region.
The tri-series, featuring hosts UAE, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, serves as an essential warm-up for the upcoming Asia Cup (September 9-28) in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
For the Afghanistan team, participating in an international match was emotionally taxing due to the recent earthquake’s impact in their homeland.
The death toll from the powerful quake in eastern Afghanistan has climbed to over 800, as reported by the Taliban government spokesman on Monday, with most casualties in the remote Kunar province.
According to spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid at a Kabul press conference, approximately 800 people perished and 2,500 were injured in Kunar, while the numbers in Nangarhar province remained at 12 dead and 255 injured.
