The UAE delivered an impressive performance before falling to Pakistan by 31 runs in an exciting tri-series match at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
Pakistan, having defeated Afghanistan in the opening match on Friday, set a challenging target of 207 all out in 20 overs. Saim Ayub, the promising young opener, shone with a remarkable 69 off 38 balls, including 7 fours and 4 sixes.
Thanks to Ayub’s exceptional batting, Pakistan reached 104 by the 12th over, despite the UAE’s efforts to contain them from the other end.
After Ayub’s dismissal as the fourth wicket at 104, the UAE had a chance to limit the 2009 T20 World Cup champions to a modest total.
However, Hasan Nawaz (56 off 26 balls) and Mohammad Nawaz (25 off 15 balls) revitalized the innings with an impressive 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Hasan, in particular, dazzled the crowd with six enormous sixes.
Saghir Khan (2/44) and Junaid Siddique (3/49) were the UAE’s top bowlers, yet they struggled to contain Pakistan’s aggressive batters.
In response, the UAE found themselves in trouble at 76/5, despite a spirited cameo from Pakistan-born Muhammad Wasim (33 off 18 balls) in the top order.
But Asif Khan, another Pakistan-born UAE player, mounted a fierce counterattack, scoring 77 off 35 balls.
The 35-year-old struck six sixes and six fours, showcasing his skills against a Test-playing nation.
While Pakistan’s victory margin could have been greater, Asif’s performance ensured the UAE left with pride intact.
Veteran pacer Hasan Ali claimed three wickets for 47 runs, with left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz (4-0-21-2) delivering an exceptional bowling performance.
Ayub, fresh from his impressive half-century, also took two wickets with his off-spin, earning the man-of-the-match award.
The UAE will face Afghanistan in their second match on Sunday.
This tri-series serves as a warm-up for the Asia Cup (September 9-28) in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, marking the UAE’s first appearance in over a decade.
