A recent survey by Premier Inn Middle East reveals that 9 out of 10 UAE residents consider breakfast the most crucial meal to start their day, with eggs as their top choice. Fresh fruits are the preferred healthy option, and pancakes are the favorite morning treat.

The survey highlights that 91% of respondents view breakfast as essential, with 76% eating it daily and 18% at least weekly, while only 2% never partake. Reasons for skipping include lack of time (31%), not being hungry (31%), or opting to eat later (15%).

About 47% of respondents have breakfast between 8-10 am, and 43% between 6-8 am, which aligns well with the body’s natural rhythm, says clinical dietician Mitun De Sarkar. “Eating between 6 and 10 am matches the body’s natural clock,” De Sarkar explains. “Morning cortisol levels are high, so pairing protein with whole grains balances energy. Aim to eat within 2-3 hours of waking — earlier if active. Eat when slightly hungry, not starving.”

Breakfast is vital for brain function, memory, mood stabilization, and reducing the likelihood of over-snacking, adds De Sarkar. “Regular breakfast eaters have up to 30% better focus, with children performing better on tests and adults reporting sharper concentration at work. Skipping breakfast often leads to stronger cravings later.”

De Sarkar notes that while intermittent fasting suits some, it’s not universal. “For women, regular fasting may elevate stress hormones and disrupt cycles, so it should be customized. My tip: a quick 5-minute meal like Greek yogurt with seeds and berries can jumpstart your metabolism.”

Breakfast favorites

Eggs are the favorite breakfast dish for 88% of respondents, preferred as omelettes (36%), fried sunny side up (19%), scrambled (18%), or boiled (12%).

Fresh fruits are favored by 81% for health, and 52% choose pancakes for a treat. Croissants, toast, cheese, sausages, hash browns, yogurt, and salad are also popular.

De Sarkar says, “Residents love a balanced breakfast. Eggs and fresh fruit show a demand for protein and produce, while pastries and pancakes highlight indulgence. People want variety — a mix of healthy and indulgent — reflecting a global trend toward flexible eating.”

“Omelettes are popular because they are nutritious. Add mushrooms, spinach, or tomatoes for fiber. Boiled or poached eggs have fewer calories than fried ones, which can be enjoyed occasionally with greens or wholegrain toast,” she adds.

Popular breakfast drinks include coffee (69%), fruit juice (66%), tea (43%), water (40%), and smoothies (24%).

De Sarkar advises starting with water before coffee for hydration and alertness. “Coffee is best 30-60 minutes after waking when cortisol drops, enhancing caffeine’s effect without a crash. Tea provides antioxidants, and whole fruit is better than juice for fiber. Keep smoothies simple and low in sugar.”

Bed and breakfast

85% of respondents say breakfast provides an energy boost to start the day. Simon Leigh, managing director of Premier Inn Middle East, states, “A good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast are intertwined. These insights help us understand our guests’ morning preferences better.”

Hotels are the most popular breakfast location (33%), followed by home (32%) and cafés/restaurants (17%). Breakfast buffets are a UAE favorite, with 98% enjoying breakfast at hotels. Most wear casual attire (81%), while 8% opt for pajamas/loungewear and 3% for business wear.

De Sarkar observes, “Hotel breakfasts are almost a tradition — even after a late night, many set alarms just to attend. After a generous breakfast, skipping lunch is easy! It’s comfort, indulgence, and convenience in one. Some even show up in pajamas or bathrobes, highlighting the relaxed, enjoyable nature of hotel breakfasts.”
