A yellow warning is in effect in the Netherlands, as the autumn storm is predicted to bring winds up to 120kmph on Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile, some Dutch provinces have issued orange alerts.

The storm marks the beginning of autumn in the region, with temperatures expected to drop following its passage. The storm’s effects will be felt in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

In the UK, gusty winds and rain are possible but less severe than in Europe. Local reports warn of possible flooding and transport disruptions.

Why Storm Benjamin?

Storm names are chosen annually with public input from Britain, the Netherlands, and Ireland. This year’s list for storms from these regions until August 2026 did not include ‘Benjamin’.

France’s Met Office, Météo France, named ‘Storm Benjamin,’ as it originated there and will have significant impact.

Once a storm is named by a meteorological agency, all countries agree to use the same name for consistency and clear communication of impacts.
