UAE Launches Affordable Health Insurance for Workers

The UAE has unveiled a basic health insurance package for private sector employees and domestic workers in the Northern Emirates, with premiums beginning at just Dh320 annually.

This package offers immediate coverage for workers with chronic conditions, accommodating individuals aged between 1 and 64. Those over 64 are required to submit a medical disclosure form along with recent medical reports.

Starting January 1, 2025, the health insurance scheme will cover private sector employees in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. This system is already mandatory in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

This initiative aims to ensure complete health insurance coverage for all workers in the UAE.

The package includes treatment costs with a 20% co-payment for inpatient care during hospital stays for medical treatments or surgeries. Insured individuals pay up to Dh500 per visit, with an annual limit of Dh1,000, covering medications. Beyond these limits, the insurance covers 100% of treatment expenses.

For outpatient care, requiring medical visits, diagnostic tests, or minor procedures without hospital admission, a 25% co-payment applies, capping at Dh100 per visit. Follow-up visits within seven days for the same condition require no co-payment, while medication co-payments are capped at 30%, with an annual limit of Dh1,500, as stated by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).

The basic plan network includes seven hospitals, 46 clinics and medical centres, and 45 pharmacies.

Dependents of workers can enjoy the same benefits and pricing as outlined in the insurance policy.

From January 1, 2025, employers can purchase this new insurance package through the DubaiCare Network or other accredited insurance providers via various channels, including the Insurance Pool website, smart applications, and business service centres nationwide.

“This health insurance scheme demonstrates the UAE’s dedication to providing comprehensive protection for all workers in the labour market, enhancing quality of life by granting access to high-quality healthcare services for private sector employees and domestic workers,” stated Khalil Al Khoori, undersecretary of labour market and Emiratisation operations at MoHRE.
