Since the start of 2025, the UAE’s Cyber Security Council has documented over 12,000 Wi-Fi breaches.

The council noted that this accounts for about 35% of all cyberattacks in the nation. Hackers exploit open, free Wi-Fi to steal passwords, banking details, and personal information.

Many people are unaware of the risks posed by public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in cafes, airports, and malls. While they offer speed and no cost, these networks often lack security, making them prime targets for cyberattacks.

Open network users face risks like “man-in-the-middle” attacks, where hackers can intercept data, redirect to fake websites, and even record calls. They might also unknowingly download malware.

The Cyber Security Council recommends three steps for safe browsing on public networks:

  1. Use a trusted VPN to encrypt your connection, blocking unauthorized data access.

  2. Enable the “Safe Browsing” feature to avoid suspicious sites.

  3. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts like banking or personal email on open Wi-Fi.

Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Government Cybersecurity Council, stated that the UAE is committed to creating a secure cyberspace to protect users amid rapid technological advances. This aligns with the national vision to enhance digital trust and promote cybersecurity awareness.

The council stressed that a reliable VPN ensures privacy and protects digital identities in a vulnerable online world. Awareness is the first defense against cybercrime, and preventative measures are crucial.

The Cyber Security Council’s weekly awareness campaign, part of the Cyber Pulse initiative, is themed “Free Wi-Fi may reveal your personal data” in its second week. It aims to educate on protecting personal data and countering cyber threats. The campaign targets both individuals and institutions to bolster cyber awareness.
