On Friday, a UAE-driven initiative to supply desalinated water to over a million people in the Gaza Strip was launched, offering critical resources to its residents.

While global attention is on the hunger crisis in Gaza, following 22 months of an intense Israeli military campaign leading to a UN famine declaration in parts of the area, aid organizations highlight the equally pressing water crisis.

The UAE’s water pipeline project will channel desalinated water from Emirati facilities in Egypt to Gaza, ensuring clean water access for tens of thousands of families facing severe shortages since the conflict began.

This extensive pipeline, the largest of its type, stretches 7.5 kilometers with a daily capacity of about 2 million gallons, serving over a million residents. It is also linked to the Al-Buraq reservoir in Khan Younis, which holds 5,000 m³, broadening access to clean water.

This significant project is part of ongoing Emirati initiatives in Gaza, which include the construction of six desalination plants, supply of reservoirs and tankers, and maintenance of wells.

Post-inauguration, journalists, civil society members, and community leaders toured the pipeline and reservoirs across various areas to witness the water pumping process and the distribution points supplying drinking water throughout Gaza.

Organized by “Operation Chivalrous Knight 3,” the inauguration signaled the commencement of desalinated water pumping from Egypt to southern Gaza.
