Every December, the UAE embraces a festive atmosphere as the nation prepares to commemorate the historic unification of its seven Emirates on December 2.

Renamed Eid Al Etihad, previously known as UAE National Day until 2024, this event translates to ‘Festival of the Union’. It highlights the concept of ‘union’ (Etihad), celebrating the unification that occurred on December 2, 1971.

Eid Al Etihad is more than just a public holiday; it’s a grand celebration of the country’s heritage, unity, strength, and national pride.

Historical Background

In 1971, the leaders of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah united to form the Union. Ras Al Khaimah joined in early 1972, marking the birth of the UAE, which has since emerged as a global powerhouse.

Public Holidays

For many, Eid Al Etihad means public holidays. Both public and private sector workers usually enjoy days off on December 2 and 3, perfect for staycations, road trips, or simply unwinding.

This year, holidays fall midweek on Tuesday, December 2, and Wednesday, December 3. Consider taking leave on Monday, December 1, and Thursday and Friday (Dec 4, 5) to enjoy a 9-day break, including weekends.

Recent Celebrations

Preparations for the 54th Eid Al Etihad are underway, and residents are encouraged to gear up for this year’s festivities.

In 2022, the 51st National Day focused on storytelling, with a spectacular show in Abu Dhabi featuring drones, dancers, and Emirati culture. It honored Sheikh Khalifa and showcased the Etihad Rail project.

The 2023 celebration, themed ‘The Story of Our Union’, used cutting-edge technology like augmented reality to narrate the UAE’s growth, with fireworks lighting up the skies across the Emirates.

In 2024, Al Ain hosted a grand celebration with 10,000 artists, camels, and Jebel Hafeet as the backdrop, blending nature with UAE traditions.

What to Anticipate in 2025

Expect grand celebrations from the UAE. Though the full schedule is pending, anticipate more lights, tech, and perhaps surprise concerts. Here’s what might be in store:

  • Massive fireworks displays across all Emirates.

  • Drone shows narrating the UAE’s story.

  • Free public events like parades, cultural dances, and music festivals.

  • Discounts and offers from malls, restaurants, and hotels.

  • Traffic fine reductions, as seen in 2024 with a 50% discount in four Emirates.

  • Free public parking, though details are awaited due to Parkin and Parkonic management.

December is a time when skyscrapers glow in national colors, and families come together to celebrate the past and future.

Eid Al Etihad serves as a proud reminder of the UAE’s journey and its forward trajectory.
