Al-Shaybani stated on his account on the ‘X’ platform: ‘After years of isolation imposed by Assad’s chemical regime, the Syrian embassy in London has reopened,’ affirming that ‘Syria is returning to the world with its free identity.’
The British government announced in July, during the first visit by Foreign Minister David Lammy in 14 years, that Foreign Minister David Lammy made an official visit to the Syrian capital, Damascus, where he held talks with Syrian officials. Lammy confirmed during the visit the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting the Syrian government in fulfilling its international obligations, especially in humanitarian and security fields, according to Western media.
An official statement clarified that this visit is part of a ‘new diplomatic approach’ aimed at enhancing communication with regional parties to support stability in Syria and endorse political solution efforts under the auspices of the United Nations.
The Syrian transitional president in Damascus recently received the British Foreign Minister, accompanied by Foreign and Expatriates Minister Asaad al-Shaybani, to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to enhance cooperation, in addition to regional and international developments, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
In a related context, London revealed the allocation of new humanitarian aid worth £94.5 million to meet the urgent needs of Syrians affected by the ongoing crisis. This package includes support for health and food sectors, along with projects to shelter the displaced.
This step marks a significant shift in British policy towards Syria, which had experienced a diplomatic break since the outbreak of the conflict in 2011. This visit comes amid accelerated European efforts to reassess relations with Damascus in light of recent regional and international developments.
