Western media reported on Friday morning that Keir Starmer announced plans to introduce a ‘free digital identity’ for citizens and residents in the country, as a last and serious attempt to curb illegal immigration. The British government stated that ‘this step will facilitate applying for services such as driver’s licenses, childcare, and social care, while also easing access.’ It explained that the ‘new digital identity’ will be stored on citizens’ phones, and individuals will not be required to carry or present their IDs, but it will be ‘mandatory as a means to prove the right to work.’

The British government published a statement saying, ‘This will prevent those who do not have the right to be here from finding work, reducing their opportunities to earn money, which is one of the main attractions for people who come to the UK illegally.’

The announcement of the ‘new digital identity’ comes as the Labour Party (the ruling party) prepares for its annual conference amid intense pressure, particularly concerning immigration. Starmer said, ‘The digital identity represents a tremendous opportunity for the UK… It will also offer countless benefits to ordinary citizens, and we are making a strenuous effort to provide a fairer Britain for those who want to see change, not division.’

Since the abolition of identity cards in Britain after World War II, British governments have not issued similar cards, and citizens instead rely on passports and driver’s licenses to prove their identity.
