UN Boosts Humanitarian Aid for Gaza with $20M

This follows the allocation of 9 million USD last week to ensure the provision of adequate fuel supplies to continue delivering life-saving services across the sector, bringing the total funding from the Central Emergency Response Fund for Gaza to 20 million USD, according to the United Nations website.

While in Sharm El-Sheikh ahead of the summit in Egypt today, Fletcher stated that the release of Israeli hostages and the transfer of Palestinian prisoners is a crucial step in implementing the peace agreement. Fletcher affirmed that the expansion of humanitarian aid planned by the United Nations and its partners in Gaza is progressing well.

Meanwhile, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicates that under the humanitarian plan for the first sixty days of the ceasefire, the United Nations and its partners will provide life-saving aid and services to populations throughout the sector wherever support is needed, including food, water, health services, shelter supplies, hygiene supplies, protection support, and other necessary assistance.

The UN Mechanism 2720 reported that it obtained Israel’s approval for additional aid, raising the authorized pipeline volume to 190,000 metric tons, as of yesterday. These supplies are located across the region – in Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, and the West Bank – and are ready for delivery, with some already en route, as the United Nations and its partners continue to regularly bring supplies into Gaza.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that cooking gas entered Gaza yesterday for the first time since March. Additionally, more tents for displaced families, frozen meat, fresh fruit, flour, and medicines crossed into Gaza throughout the day.

Inside Gaza, humanitarian workers can now move more freely in many areas, with their teams reaching populations isolated for several months. With eased movement and access restrictions in multiple locations, humanitarian workers have been able to pre-position medical and emergency supplies in the places most in need and assess main roads for explosive hazards.

Partners are increasing meal production in community kitchens in the north, where thousands of people have already returned to that part of Gaza. The United Nations and its partners assist kitchens and bakeries in providing hundreds of thousands of meals and bread packages daily, in addition to trucking drinking water to residents’ accommodations, according to the United Nations website.

Since Friday, and until yesterday, partners monitoring displacement recorded nearly 310,000 movements of people from southern Gaza to the north, and about 23,000 movements in other directions.
