US-China Customs War Escalation

Moscow – Sputnik. An actual customs war erupted between China and the United States after President Donald Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports in February, then raised it to 20% in March. After several reciprocal steps, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods reached 145%, while Chinese tariffs on U.S. exports to China reached 125%. The two countries agreed on a 90-day period, starting from May 14. Thus, China imposed a 10% tariff on U.S. imports, while the United States imposed a 30% tariff on Chinese imports. It is noted that the last time supplies decreased was in February 2009, when total imports amounted to $18.85 billion. At the same time, exports from the United States to China increased by 44% in June 2025, reaching $9.44 billion, compared to $6.55 billion in the previous month. U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that he might meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping by the end of the year, provided that China and the United States reach a trade agreement. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated at the end of July that although the United States could benefit from a potential comprehensive trade war with China, such a conflict would affect both countries and have global repercussions.
