US Embassy in Haiti Warns of Heavy Gunfire

The US State Department said in a statement: “There is information about heavy gunfire exchange in the Tabarre neighborhood near the US Embassy. US government employees should refrain from any official outings outside the diplomatic compound. Avoid the area.” Haiti is facing an escalating wave of violence and chaos, with rival gangs controlling vast areas of the country. The areas under gang control are witnessing horrific acts of violence, exacerbating the suffering of the population. At least 3,141 people have died, according to a report released by the High Commissioner for Human Rights last month, during the first half of this year as a result of gang-led violence. The report confirms that these acts are further destabilizing a nation already suffering from deep economic and political challenges.
