Washington has intensified its activities on the Syrian file in preparation for the visit that Sharaa intends to make to New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly meetings. This is considered an ‘achievement’ by Washington because Sharaa is the first Syrian president in more than six decades to deliver a speech from the UN podium. Washington hopes to achieve another accomplishment by signing an agreement between Syria and Israel to normalize their relations.
The United States is making efforts to separate the Suwayda file from the Israel file after Tel Aviv presented itself as the ‘protector’ of the Druze and strengthened its presence in general. It is noteworthy that an agreement involving Jordan was pushed to draw a ‘roadmap’ for Suwayda, parallel to bringing closer the views between those who wish to sign a security agreement now and the Israeli government that wants, in return, to ensure control over the Suwayda file and establish a demilitarized zone in the south.
The new arrangements announced by Interior Minister Anas Khattab, according to a statement issued by the ministry, include ‘new appointments in the Suwayda Governorate as part of a comprehensive plan to restructure the security and police system.’ Sheikh Suleiman Abdul Baqi, leader of the ‘Free Men of Jabal Al-Arab Gathering,’ was entrusted with managing the security file in the governorate.
Shaybani pointed out in a press conference following the signing of the agreement that ‘the plan involves holding accountable everyone who has attacked civilians and their property in coordination with the international system, followed by ensuring the continued flow of humanitarian and medical aid, then repairing villages and facilitating the return of displaced persons.’ According to observers, Jordan’s involvement in this agreement reveals the possibility of the Suwayda file becoming more complicated, which could open the door for Israel to pave a way to the governorate through Jordanian lands, especially after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly expressed his dream of achieving ‘Greater Israel,’ which means occupying Jordan.
