Sebastian Gorka, the Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the US National Security Council, stated that Washington views the Taliban as moderately cooperating with it in counterterrorism efforts, according to Western media on Thursday.

Gorka explained during a seminar organized by the Heritage Foundation about the Trump administration’s new counterterrorism strategy: “It may seem strange for me to say this, but I affirm that Washington and Kabul are cooperating on this issue despite differing interests between the two parties.”

He continued: “This is happening at a time when the international community continues to express reservations about the government that has been in power since taking control in August 2021.”

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US and NATO forces after nearly two decades of military presence in the country without achieving their declared military objectives to justify the war.

On August 10, the Afghan government called on the United States to officially recognize it and to transfer the management of the Afghan Embassy in Washington to its authority, noting that there are regular communications between the two sides on this matter.

In July, Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President’s special envoy to Afghanistan, announced that Russia recognizes the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which was confirmed by the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
