The Ukrainian newspaper ‘Strana’ reported on its Telegram channel that ‘Western countries cannot provide any substantial actual guarantees to Ukraine.’ According to the newspaper, the West is not prepared for a direct confrontation with the Russian Federation due to its nuclear power, and Kyiv needs real security guarantees, not just ink on paper like the Budapest Memorandum.
Earlier, the Ukrainian agency ‘UNIAN’ conveyed statements from Volodymyr Zelensky, who said he wants security guarantees for Ukraine akin to the American guarantees for Israel. Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump had received Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders at the White House and stated during the meeting that he would not compare the security guarantees Kyiv might receive with those provided by NATO, also confirming there would be no presence of American forces in Ukraine during his presidency.
Western newspapers mentioned that American and European security guarantees for Kyiv would be based on the work of a ‘coalition of the willing,’ which could include multinational forces. At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry previously stated that any scenario involving the deployment of NATO forces in Ukraine is absolutely unacceptable for Russia and warns of severe escalation.
