Zakher Intersection Upgrade Speeds Up Al Ain Traffic

The Zakher Intersection in Al Ain has been officially opened after significant upgrades, as announced by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) on Monday.

This Dh185-million initiative transformed the previous four-way roundabout into a traffic light-controlled intersection to enhance safety and reduce travel times. The redevelopment included a three-lane tunnel, 900 meters long in each direction, running beneath Hazza bin Sultan Street—a crucial route connecting the north and south of the town centre.

The intersection now links Falaj Hazza in the east to Zakher in the west, and connects the Hazza bin Sultan roundabout in the north with the Shiab Alashkhar roundabout in the south.

Travel times have been significantly reduced for commuters heading north from Zakher, Shiab Alashkhar, Shiab AlWatah, and Ain Alfaydah.

This 22-month project is part of several strategic efforts aimed at enhancing traffic flow and improving mobility quality in Al Ain to cater to the region’s growing population.

Abdulla Hamdan Al Amery, Executive Director of Al Ain Infrastructure Sector at Al Ain City Municipality, stated, “The new intersection demonstrates our commitment to developing world-class infrastructure throughout the Al Ain Region. It’s crucial to our ongoing efforts to maintain a robust, efficient, and supportive road network for our residents and visitors.”
