At the age of just 12, Leonardo Mariotti has become the youngest student ever accepted at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai and one of the youngest globally. Collaborating with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), RIT Dubai crafted a unique pilot program to match his exceptional talents.
Leonardo’s remarkable journey of resilience, curiosity, and unconventional thinking began early. He showcased an outstanding ability to conceptualize and create intricate ideas, despite struggles with writing. Diagnosed with Asperger’s, Dyslexia, Tourette’s, and ADHD, his mind functions in exceptional ways, combining traits that enhance his creativity.
As his mother, Yolanda Pohl-Mariotti, describes, “He wasn’t just born with one instrument; he embodies an entire orchestra. Each unique neurological trait plays its melody, together forming a stunning symphony of uniqueness.”
His path has been shaped by the support of Lycée Français International de l’AFLEC, where educators, specialists, and therapists collaborated to nurture his potential. Their dedication to inclusion and excellence transformed Leonardo’s individuality into his greatest asset. This partnership between family, school, and experts exemplifies how belief, patience, and personalized education can help neurodiverse learners maximize their potential.
When Leonardo’s parents approached RIT Dubai, the university looked beyond his age to recognize his talent and unique potential. His curriculum, tailored to his skills and interests, includes Robotics, 3D Modeling and Printing, Engineering, Computer Coding, Artificial Intelligence, and New Media Design.
This initiative highlights RIT Dubai’s commitment to inclusive and innovative education, providing opportunities for exceptional students whose talents transcend traditional paths. Led by Dr. Yousef Al Assaf, RIT Dubai fosters a learning environment valuing diversity, nurturing creativity, and encouraging students to challenge boundaries in the pursuit of knowledge.
Established in 1829 in Rochester, New York, RIT is a global leader in technology, creativity, and innovation. Its Dubai campus shares this forward-thinking vision, empowering exceptional talent, embracing diversity, and preparing students to shape a smarter, more sustainable future. Leonardo’s story also reflects the UAE’s national dedication to inclusion and educational excellence. Through efforts by the Ministry of Education and KHDA, the nation pioneers approaches celebrating neurodiversity, inspiring the world to view differences as strengths.
Now in his second month at RIT Dubai, Leonardo continues to challenge perceptions and inspire those around him. He embodies every child ever told they were “too different” and every educator who chose to see potential rather than limitations. His story is a testament that brilliance manifests in various forms and that embracing differences can unlock true genius.
As his mother sums up, “Leonardo possesses the mind of a scientist and the heart of a humanitarian; he is deeply curious, compassionate, and eager to explore how things work. He builds what others can’t yet imagine—perfectly imperfect structures that stand tall, just like him. Believe in your children, not despite their differences, but because of them.”
