On Thursday, a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Drake Passage, located between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica.
Following the quake, Chile’s Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service issued a tsunami alert for the Chilean Antarctic region. The tremor occurred 258 km (160 miles) northwest of Base Frei on Wednesday evening, as stated in their bulletin.
Initially, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake as an 8 magnitude but later corrected it to 7.5, with a depth of 11 km (7 miles).
The epicenter was situated over 700 km southeast of Ushuaia in Argentina, a city with approximately 57,000 inhabitants, according to the USGS.
