Hassan Al Haydos Funds Gaza School After World Cup Win

Qatar’s most experienced player, Hassan Al Haydos, has committed to financing the construction of a school and sports facility in Gaza following Qatar’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Qatar is set to make its second World Cup appearance, marking the first time through the Asian qualification route, having previously hosted the 2022 tournament.

At 34, forward Al Haydos rejoined the national team this year after announcing his intended retirement in 2024.

His leadership was crucial as Qatar defeated the United Arab Emirates 2–1 in Doha on Tuesday, securing the top spot in Group A and earning a direct spot in the World Cup in North America.

“Thanks be to God for our national team’s qualification to the 2026 World Cup finals,” said Al Haydos, a two-time Asian Cup winner, in a statement.

“This new achievement brings joy to every Qatari and everyone connected to this nation, made possible by our players’ determination and resilience despite challenges.”

Al Haydos linked this sporting success to broader humanitarian issues, referencing the recent ceasefire in Gaza and the peace summit in Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh on October 13.

“In times of celebration, we must remember the suffering of our brothers and sisters globally, letting our success inspire generosity,” he stated.

“It’s encouraging that this qualification aligns with the peace summit and the successful ceasefire in Gaza, which we hope begins a truly secure life for our people there.

“God willing, I will contribute by donating to the construction of a school and sports hall as part of Gaza’s rebuilding efforts, believing that education and sports are keys to revitalizing life.”

This donation pledge comes amid renewed global efforts to rebuild Gaza after two years of conflict.
