As the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) gears up for its second season this Saturday, it’s not just speed that will crown the winner—it’s the unique character of each car.
“We aimed to give every car a distinct driving personality,” shared Nicola Palarchi, Head of Engineering at Y2RL, A2RL’s engineering and test partner, during a media briefing. “Some cars are more aggressive, while others excel at braking or accelerating.”
This concept of personality-coding infuses a human element into machines: teams are not just programming sensors and algorithms; they’re crafting how a car reacts under pressure, when to overtake, and how to defend.

Palarchi explained, “You must make a calculated choice. Set your driver to push at the right level—not too much or you’ll veer off, not too little or you’ll be overtaken.” Although the “driver” is AI, the decision-making is based on human strategy.
This weekend’s Grand Final will showcase six fully autonomous cars racing head-to-head for the first time globally, according to the organizers. The finalists—TUM, Unimore, Kinetiz, TII Racing, PoliMOVE, and Constructor—hail from Germany, Italy, and the UAE, while five more teams (RAPSON, Code 19, Fly Eagle, FR4IAV, and TGM Grand Prix) will compete in the Silver Race.

The autonomous vehicles will vie for a US $2.25 million prize at the Yas Marina Circuit, with packed grandstands.
Beyond the race, the event serves as a live lab for autonomous mobility—hailed as “the world’s leading extreme autonomous racing series” by the organizers. “Last year, many cars could only cruise at 20–30 km/hr; now, they’re nearing human-like speeds,” Palarchi noted, highlighting the performance leap.
With such rapid advancements, this weekend’s race promises to challenge expectations: can strategic coding outpace raw speed? The race may not be solely about which car finishes first, but which team best humanized its AI.

Teams acknowledge the open challenge. “Every team imparted a unique character to their car,” Palarchi added. On Saturday, these personalities will face off against each other, and Elena Martínez-García, a data scientist from Athlone, predicts “some may choose risk, while others opt for consistency.”
Adding to the excitement, A2RL’s Season 2 Grand Final will also feature the Human vs AI exhibition between Daniil Kvyat and reigning champions TUM, a Supercar Parade, a STEM competition for 140 students, and a world-class Fan Zone with interactive robotics and family attractions.
