Abu Dhabi School Transport Policy Update

Abu Dhabi schools have revised their transportation policies to prioritize safety, student discipline, and ease. The Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) mandates schools to ensure student safety during transportation. It’s essential for parents and students to understand these policies.

Prioritizing Safety

Schools are accountable for student safety on buses, even with third-party operators. This includes student training on bus and pedestrian safety. Bus supervisors are mandatory for students under 11, ensuring close supervision for younger children.

Collecting Younger Children

Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult when leaving or arriving at school. If no adult is present at the drop-off, the child will be returned to the school after other students are dropped off.

Older siblings (15 and above) can pick up younger ones (Grade 1 and beyond) if parents provide a signed consent form. The form should confirm:

  • Parents acknowledge the elder sibling’s maturity for the task.

  • Parents have explained the responsibility to the elder sibling, who understands it.

  • Schools are not liable for incidents resulting from this policy.

Alternative Transportation

Cycle 3 students (Grades 9-12, ages 14-18) can use non-school transportation like bicycles or scooters. Parents must sign a consent form accepting responsibility, as school supervision starts on campus.

School Bus Exclusivity

School buses are solely for student transport. Field trips may use tourist buses if they meet safety standards like seat belts, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.

Regulation of Bus Fees

Bus fees are proposed by operators per the ITC School Bus Fee Framework and approved by ADEK. Exceptional fee increases require ITC coordination.

These updates enhance student safety, efficient transport management, and clear communication with parents. Other key updates must also be followed.

Journey Time and Routes

  • The maximum bus journey is capped at 60 minutes from first pick-up to last drop-off, as per the Integrated Transport Centre.

  • Students are only picked up and dropped off at designated spots. Bus supervisors ensure a guardian is present for students under 11 at drop-off. If not, students are returned to school.

School Bus Staff Requirements

  • Drivers and bus supervisors need ITC permits and registration. Supervisors for students under 11 are required, with only female supervisors unless the bus is for older boys.

School Traffic Management

  • Schools must manage traffic and have safe pick-up and drop-off plans.

  • A trained team should handle daily traffic during peak times.

  • Emergency and communication plans need updates and sharing with parents.

  • Schools should provide designated parking for buses and staff vehicles.
