Salami added, in a statement to “”, that regarding the number of cars and whether they will be allocated for local consumption or export, it depends on market needs and local demand. He clarified that with the introduction of other gasoline-powered cars, there will be a balance and control in production according to demand, whether domestic or foreign.
Regarding the number of cars aimed to be manufactured annually, he continued, “Everything will depend on the state of the market and global demand, as today no factory pre-determines the number of cars it will produce.” Salami pointed out that Algeria has a significant demand and urgent need for cars, especially electric cars, as the whole world is moving towards clean energy, and the Algerian citizen is looking for affordable prices that suit their capabilities.
Concerning infrastructure and funding, the President of the National Tax Board confirmed that there are several options proposed: either the Algerian authorities enter as a partner in the capital, or based on a request from Algeria that will bear the cost, or the possible scenario is a partnership with shared financing to a certain degree. He continued by saying, “We have to be realistic; let’s start with assembly, then talk about expansion. I don’t think Algeria will become a leading country in car exports, as this is premature. Let’s start with production and meet domestic demand, and everything else will follow in due course.”
One of the Algerian factories is preparing to implement a joint project in Algeria dedicated to urban mobility, as part of a plan to expand in the clean vehicle market. Earlier, the Chairman and General Manager of the “Economy Modern” factory, Ismail Abdulnour, announced details of the project to manufacture the first electric car in Algeria. He revealed progress in his negotiations to produce small electric cars dedicated to urban transportation, in partnership with a Chinese factory, according to “Algerian Shorouk.” Abdulnour explained that the establishment of the factory in the Ras Al-Ayoune district in the Batna province is currently being studied; a preliminary agreement has been reached with the Chinese partner amid great enthusiasm.
