Illustration for: Rare Egyptian Lizards Boost Moscow Zoo's Collection

The park welcomed a rare pair of Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards, a species known for living in arid desert and semi-desert regions of Africa. The pair (male and female) have been housed in a dedicated service area within a glass tank in the park, designed to provide the specialized care this type of reptile requires. Although the exact ages of the new lizards are not known, their presence is a significant addition to the park, as Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards are rarely bred in protected parks. These reptiles need a spacious glass tank to accommodate their size and active nature. The introduction of Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards to the Moscow Zoo enhances educational programs by exhibiting unique desert-adapted reptiles. The arrival of the Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards marks an achievement in the park’s ongoing mission to enrich its living collections with species from diverse and varied environments.
