Apple Unveils M5-Powered MacBook Pro & iPad Pro

On Wednesday, Apple AAPL.O unveiled a range of product updates, including a revamped MacBook Pro, an iPad Pro, and the second generation of the Vision Pro headset, all featuring the new M5 chip tailored for creative professionals.

With the introduction of M5-powered devices, Apple aims to compete with rivals utilizing Qualcomm and Intel’s latest AI-focused chips. This aligns with Apple’s strategy of launching its most advanced chip first in MacBook Pro and iPad Pro devices.

The updated 14-inch MacBook Pro, equipped with the M5 processor, represents a significant upgrade from last year’s M4 chip series, enabling enhanced AI-driven applications.

Despite the advancements, pricing for the new devices remains consistent with previous M4 models.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,599. The iPad Pro is priced at $999, while the second-gen Vision Pro starts at $3,499.

The M5 chip, built with an advanced 3-nanometer process, promises improved performance and energy efficiency. Apple notes that the MacBook Pro with this chip can run large language models locally.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset, initially launched in 2023, has been updated following a tepid market response. Despite positive reviews for its display, the Vision Pro remains a niche product with limited adoption.

iPad sales are expected to grow by about 6% in the fiscal year ending September 2025, following a period of decline, spurred by a smaller, more affordable model and a global rebound in electronics demand.

Mac sales are also projected to rise this year, driven by a smaller, more affordable Mac Mini with the M4 processor, appealing to budget-minded consumers.
