Aviation Device Restrictions: Safety First

In recent times, aviation authorities have introduced restrictions on electronic devices due to concerns about overheating batteries, which pose a risk of mid-air fires and potential disasters.

Three airlines recently banned Bluetooth earphones in checked luggage because these devices remain active, violating the rule that PEDs with lithium-ion batteries must be turned off when checked.

Within a month, there were two battery-related fires: one at an airport from a lithium power bank and another during a flight from a lithium battery.

At Melbourne International Airport, 150 people were evacuated from the Qantas lounge after smoke filled the area when an overheated power bank caught fire. A man suffered severe burns from the incident.

In another case, passengers were alarmed when a fire broke out in the overhead compartment of an Air China flight due to a lithium battery in cabin baggage, forcing an emergency landing.

As the aviation industry promotes safe handling of rechargeable battery devices, Emirates banned the use of power banks on flights starting October 1. For more details on power bank restrictions, read the Khaleej Times report.

Consider the restricted electronic devices on UAE airlines. Conditions apply, so passengers should check airline websites for guidelines on carrying these items.

Key Points to Remember

  • Although this is a general overview of UAE airline policies, there are additional restrictions. Check both the airport and airline websites for specific regulations on your items.

  • Power banks and e-cigarettes are allowed in cabin baggage but cannot be used or charged on flights. They must be off to prevent accidental activation.

  • After a safety recall, Etihad Airways prohibits Apple MacBook Pro laptops in checked baggage. They are allowed as carry-ons, but recalled models must remain off and uncharged during flights.

  • Dubai Airport allows a maximum of 15 mobile phones in luggage, which must be in original packaging (except personal devices) or face confiscation.

  • Only one hairstyling device with hydrocarbon gas is allowed. It must have a safety cover and cannot be used on board. Gas refills are not permitted in any baggage.

  • Drones must have removable batteries. Lithium battery-operated drones must not exceed 160Wh and must be off. A maximum of two spare batteries under 160Wh, individually protected, are allowed as cabin baggage only.
