Bio-Battery: Microbes and Plants Power

Illustration for: Bio-Battery: Microbes and Plants Power

The bio-battery is made from microbes and plants, generating an electric current using two electrodes. On one (the positively charged electrode), electrons move due to processes in plant cells and bacteria. At the same time, water is released at the second electrode (the negatively charged electrode). Tula University reported that the plant and microbes form a miniature power station operating on natural biochemical reactions. These “batteries” are called microbial plant fuel cells.

Often, the cathode reaction is what slows down the entire system, affecting its efficiency. Scientists proposed a more cost-effective material to process oxygen and convert it into water, increasing the power by one and a half times.

Scientists add that the plant-based system can be used in regions with warm climates, where there is a problem with the availability of clean water. The study concluded that after laboratory tests, the laboratory team will focus on scaling up the resulting system and testing it under conditions close to real ones.
