The ministry stated in a post on the ‘X’ platform that the incident occurred when Border Patrol officers were conducting migration monitoring operations near 26th Street and Kedzie intersection. An unidentified man driving a black Jeep opened fire on the officers before fleeing the scene, while several individuals threw paint cans and bricks at the Border Patrol vehicles. The statement confirmed that the attacker and the vehicle remain at large. The ministry noted that attacks on federal law enforcement agencies have increased over the past two months, warning of a ‘growing trend of violence and obstruction’ against its forces. The incident comes amid rising tensions in Chicago, following President Donald Trump’s deployment of 300 National Guard soldiers to the city, which sparked widespread protests during which forces used tear gas-like substances to disperse demonstrators. Illinois authorities filed a lawsuit against Trump on October 6th for using the National Guard within the state without authorization. Trump had announced in August a package of federal security measures to combat crime in Washington, which included placing the capital’s police under direct federal government supervision and deploying National Guard forces there, threatening to send in the military if necessary.
