The Brazilian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “The Brazilian government condemns the use of economic sanctions or the threat of force against our democracy,” emphasizing that the protection of freedom of expression begins first with “protecting democracy and respecting the will of the people expressed in elections.” Brazil also denounced attempts by “anti-democratic forces” to exploit foreign governments to pressure state institutions, referring to the efforts of Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of the former president, who has been residing in the United States for months and is trying to persuade Trump to sanction his country in defense of his father.

Recently, the US administration imposed and revoked visas, and sanctioned a number of government members and Supreme Federal Court judges, including Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is handling Bolsonaro’s case. The former Brazilian president faces serious charges including participation in an armed criminal organization, attempted coup, undermining the democratic system, damaging public property, and harming protected heritage.

If convicted of all charges, he could face a sentence exceeding 40 years in prison. The case has entered its final stage, with a verdict expected on Thursday or Friday, after the first two Supreme Court judges have already voted in favor of conviction.
