Burj Khalifa: World’s Top Landmark by Visitor Numbers

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai continues to make headlines with its latest achievement: it’s now recognized as the world’s most popular landmark based on annual visitor numbers.

An impressive 17 million people visit the towering Burj Khalifa each year, according to research by the analytics site Switch On Business. The study examined search volumes and visitor statistics for over 150 famous landmarks to identify which are most sought-after globally.

This architectural marvel, standing at 828 meters tall—three times the height of the Eiffel Tower—receives nearly 22 million Google searches and attracts 17 million visitors annually, generating approximately $621 million in ticket sales, as revealed by the study.

The Taj Mahal in India ranks second, also with 22 million annual searches but 7.5 million visitors. Niagara Falls comes third, drawing around 13 million visitors each year and over 1.2 million searches.

The Burj Khalifa is a must-visit for those traveling to Dubai, experts note.

“Many cities have iconic landmarks that people travel to see, and in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa stands out,” said Mir Wasim Raja, manager for MICE and holidays at Galadari Brothers International Travel Services.

“Visitors to the Burj Khalifa can experience several attractions, such as ascending nearly 800 meters in under a minute and enjoying panoramic city views,” Raja added.

Visitors should consider the best times for viewing the city from the top.

“Its immense height, stunning architecture, and breathtaking views make it a must-see. During summer, the best time is 4pm to 7pm, while in winter, it’s 3pm to 6pm, allowing for daytime, sunset, and night vistas,” explained Ranju Abraham, sales manager at Tours on Board.

According to the Burj Khalifa’s official website, sky view observatory tickets start at Dh80 per person and can exceed Dh750.

The study also highlighted that global tourist numbers reached 917 million in 2022, as travel rebounded post-pandemic.
