Over a period of four weeks, researchers studied the effects on 236 young adults in Germany through daily smartphone surveys that tracked participants’ moods and their consumption of caffeinated drinks, according to ‘Medical Xpress’. The results, published in the journal ‘Scientific Reports’, showed that caffeine intake significantly enhances mood, especially in the morning. Participants reported feeling happier and more energetic after consuming coffee or caffeinated drinks compared to days when they did not. The study indicated that caffeine improves positive feelings more than it reduces negative moods, such as sadness or anxiety, and this effect is not tied to a specific time of day.
Researcher Justin Haschenberger confirmed that the positive effect of caffeine was consistent among participants, regardless of their consumption habits or psychological conditions such as depression or sleep disorders. However, the researchers warned against excessive caffeine intake, noting that it could lead to addiction or health problems, especially if consumed late in the day, which might hinder sleep.
This study, which focused on daily life outside laboratory environments, is an important step in understanding the impact of caffeine on mood in real-life contexts. In conclusion, it seems that the morning cup of coffee is not just a daily ritual but an effective way to add a touch of joy to the start of the day, provided it is consumed in moderation.
