Call to Expel Killers from Sports Competitions

Albanese wrote on her account on the ‘X’ platform, addressing her message to the federation: ‘It’s time to expel killers from competitions. Let’s make sports free of racial discrimination and genocide.’ The captain of the Egyptian national team and Liverpool star, Mohamed Salah, delivered a fiery message after the death of Suleiman Al-Obaid, a former Palestinian national team star. Salah reposted an entry on his account on the ‘X’ platform about the death of Palestinian player Suleiman Al-Obaid and commented, ‘Can you tell us how, where, and why he died?’ The Palestinian Football Association announced last Wednesday the death of Palestinian national team player Suleiman Al-Obaid, known as the ‘Pele of Palestinian football,’ after he was shot while waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip. Al-Obaid was born in Gaza on March 24, 1984, and began his football career with the ‘Shati Services’ club, later playing with the ‘Al-Amari Youth Center’ in the West Bank and the ‘Gaza Sports Club.’ Al-Obaid was a consistent member of the Palestinian national team since his first appearance in 2007, playing 24 international matches and scoring two goals, most notably his famous bicycle kick against Yemen during the West Asian Football Federation Championship in 2010. Al-Obaid, who had lived in the Gaza Strip since 2010, was among six players from the Palestinian national team from Gaza who were turned back at the Jordanian border for ‘security reasons’ on their way to a friendly match in Mauritania, according to Palestinian media.
