The office indicated that Carney is visiting Mexico City on September 18 and 19 to discuss trade, energy, and security issues with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. The office’s statement read: “The leaders announced a comprehensive strategic partnership and a new action plan between Canada and Mexico.” The statement added that both sides emphasized opportunities to expand bilateral trade in areas such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and healthcare, and agreed to coordinate efforts in preparation for reviewing the trilateral trade agreement with the United States.

Mark Carney stated that Canada and Mexico remain committed to their partnership with the United States and aim to make the free trade agreement between the three countries fairer and more effective. Carney added at a joint press conference with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum: The United States had imposed and raised tariffs on Chinese products to 20%, justifying these measures by combating illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl.

Washington also imposed tariffs on goods from the European Union and threatened similar measures against countries whose tariffs on American products are higher than reciprocal tariffs. Ottawa and Beijing have already announced retaliatory steps, while the European Union pledged to take similar measures next April.
