Ankara – Sputnik. Earlier, Trump expressed confidence that Turkey would stop buying Russian oil. Trump and Erdogan held talks in Washington on September 25. Commenting on the possibility of stopping Russian energy imports at the request of the United States, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Russia respects Turkey’s position and has no doubt that Ankara respects itself and the interests of its people. He added, like other supplying countries, it is important. Obtaining natural gas was a very strategic step in this direction.
According to the Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority, the share of Russian oil in Turkey’s imports in 2024 was 66%, while the share of Russian gas was 41%. Under these circumstances, Ankara needs to expand the ‘alternative supply basket,’ according to the ‘Ekonomim’ newspaper.
As a Turkish diplomatic source previously told Sputnik, Ankara’s policy has not changed after the US president’s call to abandon Russian oil, but final conclusions could only be made after official statements.
