Channing Tatum, the renowned actor and film producer, recently shared why he declined a role in Derek Cianfrance’s 2010 drama Blue Valentine, as reported by People.

“I was reminded that around 20 years ago, I took on one of my initial acting roles, and Derek noticed it, believing in me long before I believed in myself,” Tatum commented while receiving the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Performer Award at the TIFF Tribute Awards, according to the publication.

“That’s why I think I couldn’t embark on that journey. I was just very scared,” he confessed, “I was utterly terrified of that specific role, so I didn’t proceed.”

After watching Tatum in the 2006 drama A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Cianfrance considered casting him. “He possesses this physicality—this body capable of storytelling,” the director remarked about Tatum.

Tatum added, “I think I suppressed it because, on some level, I regret not taking it,” reflecting on that decision. “I was intimidated by it, as I hadn’t experienced anything like it.”

Blue Valentine narrates the story of a married couple, Dean and Cindy, whose relationship deteriorates throughout the film, presented in a nonlinear manner.

Tatum disclosed another reason for rejecting the intense role was his lack of similar relationship experience at the time.

“I didn’t believe I could do it. I was just starting my acting career,” he mentioned, noting that as he collaborated with Cianfrance on Roofman, the director reminded him of that moment.

“I was like, ‘Yes, I know.’ I definitely wish I had taken it. But I think Ryan did an incredible job,” Tatum added. “So I don’t feel it was meant for me spiritually.”

Roofman features Tatum as real-life criminal Jeffrey Manchester, infamous for robbing 45 McDonald’s outlets and avoiding arrest by secretly residing in a Toys “R” Us store. The film follows Manchester’s six months in hiding, including his romance with a divorced mother (played by Kirsten Dunst).
