Giacon made these statements at a regular press conference following reports that Japan urged European and Asian countries to refrain from attending the military parade and other events to be held on September 3rd in Beijing. These events commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese aggression and the global war against fascism.

Giacon mentioned that “the Chinese government will hold this event in its capital to remember history, honor the martyrs, promote peace, and create the future,” according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.

Giacon also explained that having a correct understanding and stance towards history was a fundamental condition for Japan’s return to the international community after World War II, the political basis for Japan’s relations with neighboring countries, and a measure of Japan’s commitment to peaceful development.

He continued, “The Japanese side must face and sincerely reflect on its aggressive history, clearly distance itself from militarism, follow a path of peaceful development, and respect the feelings of the Chinese people and other affected countries in order to gain the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community.”
