In the UAE, numerous schools have started sending out winter break reminders months in advance this year, enabling families to plan holidays without disrupting their children’s education.
The Ministry of Education (MoE), along with other educational authorities in the emirates, has approved the 2025–2026 school calendar before the academic year began—April for Asian curriculum schools and September for international curriculum schools.
The first term will conclude with a four-week winter break, extended from the previous three weeks. This year, the holidays will run from December 8, 2025, to January 4, 2026, with classes resuming on January 5. This longer break aims to give students ample time to rejuvenate after a demanding term and participate in national and community activities.

Schools consistently emphasize that while family time is essential, holidays should ideally align with the official break unless in emergencies.
Effective Communication is Crucial
David Williams, Principal of Regent International School, a part of Fortes Education, highlighted the importance of communication in minimizing confusion.
“We ensure our families are informed of important dates far in advance. The entire academic calendar is shared at the year’s start, with reminders sent closer to the time via circulars and parent communication platforms. Effective communication fosters a happy school community, providing clarity and avoiding uncertainty, especially during busy travel periods like the winter break.”
Schools note that parents often inquire proactively about vacation dates, allowing them to book tickets early and plan stress-free holidays. Williams added, “For many families, the winter break is a cherished time for travel, reconnecting with loved ones, and creating memories. Confirming dates well in advance lets parents plan confidently and avoid last-minute stress.”
From the schools’ perspective, early planning keeps students engaged in class until the break. “Clear communication about vacation dates enables parents and teachers to collaborate, balancing learning with family time,” Williams stated.
Recently, the Indian School Ras Al Khaimah issued an early circular to parents, confirming, “The school will be closed for winter vacation from December 8, 2025, to January 2, 2026, reopening on January 5, 2026. We inform you in advance to assist in planning your travel (if intended) without affecting your children’s studies.”
Extra Classes for Senior Grades
Not all schools fully pause during the festive period. Some, especially those with senior grades, may hold additional sessions.
Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO-Principal of Credence High School, stated, “The main summative exam for Grades 2–12 is scheduled for October 2025. Exam dates and syllabi were communicated to parents in advance. Extra classes are arranged for Grades 10 and 12 to support board exam preparation, possibly during the winter break. The first pre-boards for Grades 10 and 12 are planned for late November and early December.”
Parents Appreciate Early Notice
Parents welcome the early sharing of dates. Ava Thompson, a British parent in Dubai, said, “Having winter vacation dates ahead is a relief. Flights around Christmas can be costly, so booking early saves money and allows us to enjoy family time in the UK without school worries.”
Raj Nair, an Indian parent in Sharjah, shared a similar view. “Getting the calendar early helps plan our trip to India. We visit grandparents during winter break, and knowing dates in advance helps coordinate with relatives and book tickets smoothly, reducing last-minute stress and ensuring the kids don’t miss lessons.”
