According to reports, the longest voluntary breath-holding period was achieved by Maricic, surpassing the previous record holder by approximately 5 minutes. Spending nearly half an hour without air is astonishing, as with each breath, a human can only replace 20% of the air in their lungs. To maximize oxygen intake, Maricic used a tank of pure oxygen to undergo a process called nitrogen purging, inhaling pure oxygen for 10 minutes before attempting to hold his breath. This increased the dissolved oxygen in his blood plasma to five times the usual amount. Even with normal air, the Croatian athlete’s capabilities are impressive, as he can hold his breath for up to 10 minutes and 8 seconds. The record for breath-holding with assistance is 24 minutes and 37.36 seconds, set by his fellow Croatian, Vodimir, on March 27, 2021.
To emphasize the significance, an average person can only hold their breath for about 30 to 90 seconds.
