The Emirati news agency ‘WAM’ reported that the police arrested a gang of three individuals of Asian nationality, who planned the crime over more than a year using complex professional methods. Investigations revealed that the gang monitored a diamond trader in Dubai after he brought a rare diamond from Europe to display for sale.

The criminals used fake identities and sophisticated fraudulent means, renting luxury cars and holding meetings in upscale hotels to deceive the trader into believing they were intermediaries for a wealthy man interested in buying the diamond. To complete their deception, they brought in a ‘famous diamond expert’ to examine the diamond and convince the trader of their credibility, prompting the latter to bring the gemstone to a villa under the pretense of completing the deal. There, the gang seized the diamond and fled.

After receiving the theft report, the General Department of Criminal Investigation and the Criminal Investigation Department at the Dubai Police General Headquarters formed a task force that used the latest artificial intelligence technologies, managing to track and arrest the three individuals in just 8 hours. It was also revealed that they planned to smuggle the diamond to an Asian country by hiding it inside a small refrigerator and shipping it through cargo services.

The diamond owner, a diamond trader operating in Dubai since 2005, expressed his astonishment at the speed with which Dubai Police acted, saying: ‘I called emergency services, and patrols arrived within minutes. The following morning, they informed me of the gang’s arrest and the diamond’s recovery.’
