Von der Leyen explained that time is a crucial factor given the current geopolitical circumstances, noting that the discussions were “constructive” and that the parties agreed to continue consultations to reach a consensus before the scheduled European Council meeting on December 18.

In the same context, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed after the meeting that all European countries must share the same risks that Belgium bears. Merz stated in a release from the German government that Belgium has a special responsibility in this matter that must be considered when making any joint decision.

Merz had previously announced that he would visit Belgium in an effort to persuade its government of the feasibility of his plan to use frozen Russian assets to increase financial support for Ukraine.

The Russian permanent mission to the European Union reported that the aim of seizing Russian assets in the EU is to prolong the conflict in Ukraine and hinder the peace process.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated yesterday, Thursday, that any illegal actions by the EU against Russian assets will face a strong response from Moscow and the entire international community.
