Foods Affecting Blood Pressure and Drowsiness

American researchers conducting the study identified five types of foods rich in ‘tyramine,’ which affects blood pressure and is associated with increased daytime drowsiness. These foods include aged cheeses, processed meats, yeast extracts, and salted or dried foods such as fish and dried fruits, according to the study published in ‘The Lancet EBioMedicine.’ Aged cheeses include cheddar, feta, parmesan, and brie, while salami, sausage, bacon, pepperoni, and mortadella are classified as processed meats. Yeast extracts include marmite and vegemite, while very ripe bananas and avocados are common examples of heavily processed dried fruits.

The study indicated that ‘Ehlers-Danlos syndrome,’ associated with these symptoms, can be treated through simple dietary adjustments. The lead researcher of the study and postdoctoral fellow in the Sleep and Circadian Disorders Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Tarek Fakih, stated: ‘Our study suggests that diet and genes may play an important role in the development of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.’

The researchers emphasized that understanding the interaction between genes and diet opens new horizons for treatment. They propose that a future clinical trial could reveal the role of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in reducing this syndrome.
