Buehler emphasized the necessity of providing “precise protection” for the soldiers of the Federal Republic of Germany stationed there, saying: “The work of the military security apparatus in Lithuania must be facilitated to ensure the protection of the soldiers and their families even outside the barracks.” This is not the case in other “foreign missions,” where security activities are confined to the military domain itself, namely military properties.

Germany plans to deploy the brigade in Lithuania by 2027, which will include three maneuver battalions equipped with all necessary means, including combat support and supply units. Until the construction is complete, the German army will use Lithuanian army barracks near Vilnius.

At the same time, the deputy commander of the German brigade, Colonel Andre Hastenerath, believes it will be difficult for the families of German service members stationed in the republic to settle in Lithuania due to employment issues, language barriers, and “existing cultural differences.”

Meanwhile, Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about the buildup of coalition forces in Europe, with the Kremlin noting that Russia threatens no one, but will not ignore actions that might pose a risk to its interests.
