Google’s $15B AI Hub Investment in India

On Tuesday, Google announced a $15 billion investment over five years to establish an AI data center in Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest investment in India to date.

This move by the US tech giant occurs amidst diplomatic tensions between India and the US regarding tariffs and an unresolved trade agreement, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged the boycott of foreign goods.

The event in New Delhi saw attendance from Indian IT and finance ministers, where Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated that the Andhra Pradesh data center would be Google’s “largest AI hub” outside the US.

“Our long-term goal is to advance India’s AI mission,” Kurian remarked.

Google plans to allocate around $85 billion this year for data center expansion as tech giants invest in infrastructure to cater to the growing AI service demand.

The data center in Visakhapatnam will initially have a 1 Gigawatt capacity.

US-India Relations

US multinationals are increasingly facing boycott calls in India, driven by business leaders and Modi supporters protesting the 50% tariff on Indian imports.

“This initiative offers significant economic and social opportunities for both India and the US,” Google stated, without mentioning the tariffs.

Recently, Indian officials have privately assured US executives of a supportive business environment despite tariff-related tensions, according to two anonymous sources speaking to Reuters.

Expanding Internet Access

Companies like Microsoft and Amazon have already invested billions in Indian data centers, a market with nearly a billion internet users.

Indian tycoons Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani have also announced plans to increase data center capacity.

Adani Group and Airtel are collaborating with Google to develop infrastructure for the new project, including a new international subsea gateway.

AI demands significant computing power, boosting the need for specialized data centers that allow tech companies to connect thousands of chips in clusters.

Earlier projections by state officials estimated the investment at $10 billion, predicting the creation of 188,000 jobs.

Alphabet Inc, Google’s parent company, views India as a crucial growth market, with YouTube being widely used and Android dominating smartphone usage.

Nonetheless, Google faces antitrust challenges in India and a lawsuit from a Bollywood couple over YouTube’s AI policies.
