Harman Baweja: From Criticism to Stardom

After closely observing Harman Baweja, it’s clear that his label as a ‘Hrithik Roshan lookalike’ is overblown, stemming from their slight resemblance in appearance and dance, yet Baweja’s potential is undeniable.

Unfortunately, Baweja’s debut film Love Story 2050 coincided with the release of Imran Khan’s Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, where Khan’s simple charm was praised, while Baweja faced criticism and was dubbed a ‘poor man’s Hrithik’.

Other Bollywood actors have faced similar comparisons. Shahid Kapoor was once seen as a younger version of Shah Rukh Khan, and Abhishek Bachchan was often said to mimic his father, Amitabh Bachchan.

With Victory, Baweja’s efforts are recognized, shedding the ‘Hrithik’ label thanks to his acting skills. He remains unfazed by comparisons, focusing on his work.

Before arriving in Dubai, Baweja spent a night in Colombo watching his latest film with Indian cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar. Despite a busy schedule, he was upbeat and engaged with the City Times team.

What fitness regime did you follow for your role in Victory?

With about forty-five international cricketers in the film, I needed to perfect my form. Coach Praveen Amre, who trains the Mumbai team, helped me adjust my grip and practice extensively, facing club-level bowlers for months to prepare for my onscreen series against Australia.

Did you live in a village to prepare for the movie?

I play a small-town boy but grew up in Mumbai. So, I visited Jaisalmer and a nearby village to understand the lifestyle, including frequent power cuts and reliance on hand pumps for water.

Tell us about your future projects.

After Victory, I have It’s My Life directed by Anees Bazmee, featuring Genelia D’Souza and Nana Patekar. Then there’s What’s Your Rashee with Priyanka Chopra and Chenab Gandhi by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Mr. Bachchan and Vidya Balan.

How is it acting with veterans?

It’s challenging. Nana Patekar, for example, is quite unpredictable. One day he might hug you, and the next, he might not acknowledge your best shot.

How disappointing was Love Story 2050 for you?

The film didn’t meet expectations due to high anticipation. Despite its commercial risk, it only lost a small sum compared to its budget, but I used criticism to fuel my determination.

How is Victory performing at the box office?

The reviews and collections are mixed, but critics who doubted me before are now acknowledging my performance.

Do Bollywood scripts lack quality?

Yes, but films like Taare Zameen Par and Chak De prove that good cinema can succeed over time.

Are you dating Amrita Rao?

If I were, her mom wouldn’t be here (laughs).

Is there someone outside the industry you’re seeing?

No, actors have a reputation that deters fathers from wanting their daughters to date them.

Isn’t it easier for you to attract attention?

Attracting attention and being in a relationship are different; I won’t deny the former.

What’s your idea of romance?

Romance isn’t about expensive gifts like solitaires but personal gestures like poetry that create lasting memories.

Do you write poetry?

Yes, I do, and I guess that’s out now!

Is it difficult working with Priyanka Chopra now?

Not at all. We laugh at the rumors about us.

What’s it like being involved with someone you’re working with?

It’s tricky at first due to the shift from personal to professional interactions, but I adapt.

Did changing your name to Hurman make a difference?

The name change was my director’s idea; superstition shouldn’t overshadow hard work.

Quick Takes

A knockout performance

Harman Baweja faced real challenges from professional cricketers during Victory. Brett Lee’s sledging was intense, yet Baweja held his ground, even hitting boundaries. Despite injuries from Chaminda Vas, Baweja formed friendships with Pakistani players, showcasing his resilience.
